Public Island - A Rift equivalent for the Forest (2024)

The Rift Dimension has a fun puzzle equivalent for pretty much every area and mechanic on the Hub Island. Combat manifests in the form of Rift Mobs, all over the island, each with their own unique and fun attack that they use instead of just being another "fast mob = harder" enemy. Farming shows up in the form of, well, the Dreadfarm, with each plant having a simple but unique way to pick it, so that farming is no longer just "hold W and left click". Even Mining shows up on the Rift, with the funky lapis ore blocks that keep growing as you mine them in the Living Cave, and there's even an entire Slayer track. But what I've kept thinking about since I got to the Village Plaza was how, in place of the Forest and Graveyard, two of the first places a player ever goes on a public island, there's just a few floating platforms, an Enigma Soul, and a bunch of nothing. I wouldn't dare suggest content for the Mountaintop, since I'm sure the admins have their plans for that, but the ideas in this post should hopefully add some cool content seamlessly to the Rift to address the absence of these areas.

The Area
The Shattered Forest (name pending) is now one of two branching pathways from the Village Plaza (the other one being the living metal area), both requiring the Skyblock Citizen Timecharm (so you still have to do Soma's taxes). Traveling there will consume 2 minutes of Rift Time.

The area will consist of large mycelium platforms separated by small jumps and with height differences, so the area will still feel broken off without being literally nothing. The platforms will have giant mushrooms growing on them with quartz pillar stems and purple wool caps, with the caps being 4 to 6 blocks off the ground.

Mobs
Mushroom Gorgers are upside-down cave spiders that will spawn on the underside of the mushrooms. (Their nametag displays below them.) They take no damage, but having more Rift Damage will let you knock them farther. They are neutral; once you've hit one, it will start using its attack, where every 3 seconds, it will aim at your location, then 1 second later, it will shoot a string of webs at that location for -30 Rift Time on contact. If you knock a Mushroom Gorger off the edge of its "platform", it will continue to rise into the air for a few seconds, before exploding and dropping items.

Items

The following resources can be found here without crafting, just from mobs and blocks:

Item Name (and Rarity)How to Get ItEffects/Notes
Gray Stem (Common)From properly chopping down the mushrooms in the Shattered Forest.
A few of the quartz pillar blocks in each stem will be replaced with Acacia Wood. These change their positions slowly, sort of like the Living Metal Snakes.
When you look at one of the wood blocks, it stops moving and can be broken by punching it. This will award the player with 1x Gray Stem.
After one of the wood blocks is broken, wood noises will play for 1 second before spawning a new moving wood block.
The blocks don't leave behind bedrock; instead, if 10 blocks in the same stem are broken, before generating a new one, the 10 missing blocks will regenerate.
Any player that is in the way of a regenerating block will be knocked outward.
Crafting material
Void Spores (Uncommon)From breaking the purple wool in the caps of the mushrooms.
Breaking one of the wool blocks will release 3 balls of bright purple particles, that are like the Mote orbs but move slower.
The wool block will then turn into purple stained glass for 20 seconds.
Picking up one of the particle orbs will give you +5 Motes, and have a 10% chance to give you 1x Void Spores.
Crafting material
Aetherfly (Uncommon)Mote orbs that spawn in the Shattered Forest have a 5% chance to be blue.
Blue ones will move slightly faster and are sometimes too high to reach by standing on the ground.
Picking up a blue orb will grant +3 Rift Time and 1x Aetherfly, but no motes.
Crafting material
Tough Webs (Common)When a Mushroom Gorger floats up and explodes, it will always drop 1x Tough Webs.Crafting material
Deathcap Talisman (Uncommon Accessory)When a Mushroom Gorger is floating up, if you shoot it with a Berberis Blowgun, a ding noise will play, increased in pitch for every previous hit.
When it explodes, if it has been hit 2 or more times, it will award each player with 20 Motes for each hit they've landed on it.
If if has been hit 3 or more times, it has a 20% chance to drop 1x Deathcap Talisman.
Rift-Transferrable.

+5 Rift Time, +1 Intelligence
