Kia Soul - kia soul - tbg

hi again

I'm now considering and researching the kia soul , does anyone have any views.

Probably a 2013/14 kia soul mainly school runs of about 20 mile round trip twice a day ( 40 ish miles total ) each trip is about 3miles town/slow drive and 17 miles 50 - 60mph . I added about the miles relative to possibility of a diesel over a petrol.

As a second question ,I've seen a 2014 soul mk1 diesel 30k . Upto the first mot 2017 it did about 21k then I'm presuming ( not spoken to anyone yet ) it got a second owner and every mot till then has done 2k ish per year the only mot issue was one year advisory on tyres . BUT should I worry about the dpf not getting hot enough to regen during those low miles over the years or would a good motorway run be enough to sort it.

thanks for all the help your lot have given now and in the past

Still haven't made your mind up.?

Depends which diesel it is..

A Soul is just a Venga in drag..

a 7-8 year old diesel?

Has it had all the services done by a Kia dealer?

The Mk1 souls were nothing to write home about..

Go for a 1.4 petrol manual Venga if you want the raised seating position, or a 1.2 or 1.4 Rio.

You are not going to find anyone on the forum recommending you buy a second hand diesel of this kind of age for the usage you describe.

However it is entirely up to you whether you follow the advice given.

still not made up my mind. I have no real preference except to be half decent, reliable etc and as such my scope for searching is rather large .

kia 1.6 diesel ????

just rang the dealer and no to kia servicing first three seem to be from unipart servicing and then the rest from a kia dealer

I presume 1.4 venga petrol to be reliable ( not yet started to look into yet )

If a BIG NO to diesels what of the kia 1.6 gdi petrol

again thanks for the help

The 1.6 petrol is thirstier for not much benefit.

I had a 1.4 5 speed venga. the Hyundai ix20 is the same mechanically.

I have had zero problems with any of my KIA cars.

Why not? Having done only 30K, surely it must have oodles of miles left in it, unless this particular engine is known for problems....is it? The usage described seems ideal, a fair amount of fast roads - or what passes for fast these days of slow motion. Seems odd to remember that over 30yrs ago one could set the cruise control for 80-85 and proceed relatively unimpeded for long distances, keeping half an eye out for 'jam sandwiches'.

ORB when you say not much benefit , in terms of what . reliability or woeful fuel economy.

John F that was my thoughts but from my limited brain function I presume more to do with the added bits these days like dpf, egr etc although how is a car that cant deal with the above driving conditions allowed on sale, I understand stop start town driving clogging up but not the above , however these issues seem to be a common theme no matter where you look and I suppose theres no smoke without fire.

but the research goes on . thanks for the continued help. greatly appreciated

It'll be a bit more powerful, but you will barely notice, It will be thirstier, but equally reliable.

Look at Kia approved used, you'll get a minimum 1 year warranty

Because it has only done 30k.

Roughly 2250 miles per annum for the last four years, that could be ripe for the emissions equipment related problems mentioned in the OP's other thread.

As the OP's described usage comes to maybe 10k tops per annum, diesel is not really necessary. Any fuel savings will be wiped out and then some, should something go wrong with the engine.

As I said earlier, the OP is under no obligation to follow advice given, and TBH, I didn't think anyone else would be in favour of the OP going for a diesel of that age unless the risk was deemed necessary for towing or covering a lot of miles.

Real MPG figures on this website show the diesel (Kia) Soul does 47mpg against the 1.6GDI's 44.5MPG. Using those figures, over 10k miles at todays average prices means the diesel would save £44 over the course of a year compared to the petrol.

If we are talking about the Soul, it doesn't come with the 1.4 petrol, only the 1.6.

On the Venga, the 1.6 has 40% more BHP than the 1.4, and a six gears rather than five. Granted the difference in torque isn't that big, but I still suspect you would notice quite a bit of difference, especially on a motorway cruise with the extra gear. I also suspect that at main road speeds in top gear, the 1.6 would be at least as efficient, but possibly more so, than the 1.4.

Finding one might be tricky though. Out of the 97 petrol Venga's on Autotrader nationwide (manual box, no insurance write offs, up to £8k), only 15 are 1.6's!.

And the ix20?, you only got the 1.6 petrol as an auto, so if you want a petrol engine and manual gearbox, its the 1.4 or nothing.

Because it very much depends upon the usage pattern of said diesel-engined vehicle (we're talking about those with DPFs), as if it was used predominantly for short journeys from cold, it'll likely have a clogged DPF and perhaps fuel dilution/overfilling issues as a result, with the previous owner getting rid of it precisely because they've experienced such problems, or at the very least offloading it as problems start to appear.

It then means the new owner - who likely has no idea of this (anyone selling it won't be advertising this fact, will they?) and may soon find they have inherited someone else's problem, especially if their own driving pattern is similar.

This is very different to pre-DPF non-common rail diesel engined cars, which were highly reliable and long-lived, as well as being fuel efficient.

If the prospective owner personally knows and trust the previous one - who owned the car from new and used it as it was designed for (predominantly high mileage), then fine, but otherwise it often can be a big gamble, especially as the financial consequences of certain failures can be steep.

If you prefer the torque of a turbo Diesel engine then take the additional risk and buy one. Just factor in the possibility of costly problems at some point. I personally prefer them too from a drivers perspective. The Polo 1.2 TDi I bought for swmbo to commute to university ended up staying with us for 5 years despite the usage latterly being unsuitable for a DPF equipped diesel. I just took it for a run occasionally to keep it happy. I was however able to fund the cost of any potential repairs or weather the total loss of the car.

As long as you are too and you prefer a diesel then go get one but buy only with a full main dealer service history. My wee Polo had a full VW and later genuine VW specialist service history, it had everything done on schedule and never wanted for anything. It still required an EGR valve but fortunately this was done under warranty from VW.

The 1.6 Kia/Hyundai diesel is generally good as is Honda’s 1.6 DTEC. They’re probably the only two modern DPF equipped 4cyl diesels I’d buy today but again I’d plan for costly repairs. The whole life cost is likely to be higher than a petrol for your usage thanks to higher repair costs but if you find this is worth the cost for the more relaxed drive of a diesel then go get one. I do currently have a petrol and a diesel car but the latter cost twice your budget and is a well regarded D5 Volvo. I think the risk worthwhile on this as I favour it to petrol on a large SUV.

The 1.4 diesel in the Venga is so slow and not particularly reliable although that may be due to the cars aerodynamics rather than the engine; the 1.4 petrol in the venga is thirsty.

Kia Soul - kia soul - kiss (keep it simple)

I had a 1.4 Venga diesel on hire; probably a 2013 model. Indeed it was lacking torque at low revs, but when wound up a bit it seemed pretty quick.
